Award-winning independent singer and songwriter Brian Franke joins the Crummy Little Podcast this week. About six years ago, Brian quit his day job to become a full-time musician. Since then, he’s enjoyed success not only as a solo act, but also with Sara Davenport as part of the duo FarAway.
Brian ain’t just some chump strumming his guitar for nickels at Whistlin’ Pete’s Bar and Tavern either. In addition to being very obviously talented, he’s also quite observant of the business side of the music industry. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes for people breaking into the music scene today, and Brian’s insight is worth a listen.
Also, as I allude to at the top of the show, Brian and I were teammates on the UMass DC-area alumni softball team. Brian played an excellent outfield while providing calm on-field leadership, as he learned from years of watching Don Mattingly. Now he’s retired and plays guitar. Come to think of it, he’s pretty much Bernie Williams.

Extras:
- Brian’s solo stuff is available on iTunes or wherever MP3’s are sold. You can follow him on Facebook and Twitter, and don’t forget to check out his website.
- Same thing with FarAway. Their EP is on iTunes, and you can follow them on Facebook, on Twitter, or at their website.
- In the podcast, Brian mentions streaming royalties for musicians – and references this op-ed from Aloe Blacc, who “won” Spotify but made very little actual money for the achievement.
